Africa’s Informal Employment

Highlights:

• Africa has the highest rate of informality in the world estimated at 72% of non-agricultural employment.
• Some African countries have rates as high as 90% of their non-agricultural employment informality.
• In gender terms the rate of informal employment is higher among women at 79% compared to men at 68%.
