The fifth edition of the ALN Africa Investment Conference took place on 7-8 November 2018 at the Four Seasons Resort located at the beautiful Jumeirah Beach in Dubai. It ran for one and a half days with intense plenary and breakaway discussions which focused on current issues impacting business in Africa. The country spotlight sessions involved business leaders showcasing selected investment destinations within the continent.
The Conference was attended by over 300 delegates, including c-suite executives, business owners, public figures from the Republic of Malawi, Republic of Malta, Republic of South Africa, Republic of Mali, and the United Arab Emirates, and representatives from key government entities and NGOs, such as the US Chamber of Commerce, the US Trade and Development Agency, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Development Bank of Southern Africa and Enterprise Singapore, and UN-Habitat, among others. From the private sector, there was important participation by industry titans, including Google, Citigroup, Microsoft, Standard Bank, ATI, DEG, WeWork, Equity Group, General Electric, Masawara, and Bellhouse Capital. It also showcased promising African entrepreneurs in the Budding Lions session.
In addition to thoughtful discussions on business matters, the Conference highlighted two CSR projects focusing on the environment and healthcare access in marginalised communities: The Flipflopi and Safari Doctors initiative. The conference also supported the African arts by inviting Sauti Sol, an award-winning afro pop group, crowned as one of the best African Groups by MTV and best African group by the ALL Africa Music Awards.

Dr Eduardo López Moreno is the Director of Research and Capacity Development at UN-Habitat. Prior to this post, he was the Chief of the Global Urban Observatory from 2002 to 2008, Senior Technical Adviser in the Bureau of Africa and the Arab States at UN-Habitat from 1999 to 2001 and Chief Technical Adviser in Angola for UN-Habitat from 1996 to 1999.
He is also a Board Member of the Prague Institute’s Global Urban Development Program and member of the Editorial Board of the International Magazine “Urban Space”, published in Teheran, Iran by IAARA. His qualifications include a Ph.D. in urban geography from the University of Paris III-Sorbonne in France and a master’s degree in urban sociology in the same University. He also has a BA in Architecture from the University of Guadalajara, Mexico.

Greg Metro is Managing Director for Schulze Global in Ethiopia. He has over 15 years of professional experience in private equity, investment banking, strategy consulting and operations. Dr Greg Mills heads the Johannesburg-based Brenthurst Foundation, established in 2005 by the Oppenheimer family to strengthen African economic performance.
